<title>New GHA homes transform Pollok site</title>
<description><![CDATA[Tenants from across the city are celebrating moving into new Glasgow Housing Association &#40;GHA&#41; homes in the South Side&#46;The 70 modern&#44; spacious new homes in Brockburn Road&#44; Pollok&#44; have completely transformed a site which used to feature cold&#44; draughty and difficult&#45;to&#45;let tenements&#46;Delighted tenants&#44; who have moved from houses which are being demolished&#44; were joined by constituency MSP Johann Lamont to mark the official opening of the development&#46;The development is a mix of houses and flats&#44; with four of the flats built to wheelchair standard&#46;Tenant Agnes Fyfe&#44; 56&#44; moved from Toryglen with husband Ronald to a semi&#45;detached in Brockburn Road&#46;Agnes said: &amp;ldquo;I couldn&#39;t ask for any more&#46; Our last place was cold and damp and it was hard getting up the stairs&#44; but this house is nice and warm with good size rooms and a front and back garden&#46;&amp;ldquo;It&#39;s made a big difference to our lives&#46; I can&#39;t see us moving again&#46; It&#39;s like heaven here&#46;&quot;Johann Lamont MSP added: &amp;ldquo;I am delighted by this development&#46;  Politics is about changing people&#39;s lives and the long road to improve housing in Glasgow ends in developments like this where people can live in homes they are proud of and build communities they can have pride in too&#46;&quot;The new homes are environmentally friendly&#44; achieving a ‘very good&#39; rating under Ecohomes standards&#44; an assessment scheme run by Building Research Establishment Ltd &#40;BRE&#41; which grades each house according to materials used&#44; energy efficiency and availability of public transport&#46;They also have Secured by Design accreditation&#44; a police initiative which helps cut crime by improving home security&#46;Jim Mullaney&#44; GHA&#39;s Housing Operations Manager for the area&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;The Brockburn Road area really has been transformed by these new homes&#46;&amp;ldquo;The previous tenements were unpopular because they were damp and had very little security&#44; but these warm&#44; spacious and energy&#45;efficient homes have made a big difference&#46;&amp;ldquo;They&#39;re very popular with tenants and are helping us play our part in the regeneration of the Pollok area&#46;&quot;The development at Brockburn Road&#44; built by contractors Cruden Building and Renewals Ltd&#44; is part of the second phase of GHA&#39;s new&#45;build programme&#44; which will see 411 homes built at nine sites across Glasgow&#46;Cruden Building and Renewals and its subcontractors have also created 19 jobs for people in the Pollok area as part of GHA&#39;s new&#45;build programme&#46;Allan Callaghan&#44; Managing Director of Cruden Building and Renewals Ltd&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;We&#39;re pleased to be part of the regeneration of the Pollok area&#46; The Brockburn Road development has increased the selection of homes available to tenants and offered employment opportunities for local workers&#46;&quot;]]></description>

<title>New facilities for GHA sheltered housing tenants </title>
<description><![CDATA[Two more GHA sheltered housing complexes are to benefit from purpose&#45;built community rooms later this year&#46;The new facilities&#44; at Sannox Gardens in Dennistoun&#44; and at Sandford Gardens in Baillieston&#44; will mean older tenants have extra space for a wider range of social activities&#46;The new community rooms will be built as part of extensive investment work GHA is carrying out at both sheltered housing complexes&#46;Work on installing overcladding and a new roof and new lift at Sannox Gardens is expected to start in March and the new extension will be built after that&#46;Investment work at Sandford Gardens&#44; which included installing overcladding and repairing the roof&#44; has just finished and work on the new conservatory is due to start in March&#46;GHA&#39;s East Area Committee &#45; one of four Area Committees made of tenants and other community representatives &#45; agreed to spend around &#163;330&#44;000 on the new community rooms&#46;Similar extensions have been built at Joppa Street&#44; Smithycroft and Marfield sheltered housing complexes in the east end&#44; while work is well underway on another community room at Brockburn Road Very Sheltered Housing Complex in Pollok&#46;Robert McCormick&#44; Chair of GHA&#39;s East Area Committee&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;These community rooms have proved very popular when they have been built elsewhere&#46;&amp;ldquo;Our sheltered housing tenants are very active&#44; and these new communal areas help them enjoy a wider range of activities and socialise together more&#46;&amp;ldquo;I&#39;m sure they will make a big difference to tenants at both complexes&#46;&quot;]]></description>

<title>Red Road in the frame at exhibition </title>
<description><![CDATA[PEOPLE&#39;S memories of the Red Road flats will be brought to life in a new exhibition next month &#45; including stunning photos of the former underground bingo hall&#46;The ‘Red Road Underground&#39; exhibition looks at the history of the multi&#45;storey flats in the North of Glasgow and records the memories of the people who lived in the blocks&#46;Photographer Chris Leslie and illustrator Mitch Miller have put together a unique collection of photos&#44; drawings and videos over the past two years&#46;Their work forms part of the Red Road Cultural Project &#45; a partnership between GHA and Glasgow Life to mark the history of the multi&#45;storey flats before they are demolished&#46;Included in the multi&#45;media display are the final photos to be taken inside the 1000&#45;seat bingo hall&#44; which is found under the car park at 10&#45;30 Petershill Court&#46; The hall closed its doors in the 1990s&#46;The photos show a glitter ball on the ceiling and also ticket stubs left on seats&#46;As part of the exhibition&#44; the artists were also given access to the former Red Road bar ‘The Brig&#39; which closed in the late 1990s&#46; Paintings remain on the walls as well as keys and glasses left on the tables&#46;Also included are interviews with former residents recalling their memories of life in the high rises&#46;Author Alison Irvine will also be giving a reading from her novel ‘This Road Is Red&#39; which was a finalist in the 2011 Saltire Society Literary Awards&#46;The exhibition runs from 1 February until 2 March at the New Glasgow Society at 1307 Argyle Street&#46;Mitch Miller said: &amp;ldquo;Even in the derelict condition we found them in&#44; the bingo hall and The Brig were signs that life at Red Road was full of warmth&#44; good humour&#44; eccentricity and plenty of surprises&#46;&amp;ldquo;For the last few years we&#39;ve worked closely with the Red Road Cultural Project&#46;  When the New Glasgow Society asked us to exhibit at their gallery we saw an excellent opportunity to celebrate some of the work we&#39;d done as part of the project&#46; We hope this will be one of many more exhibitions that show the complex and unexpected aspects of life in a Glasgow landmark&#46;&quot;Work is ongoing at 10&#45;30 Petershill Court and 153&#45;213 Petershill Drive ahead of the planned demolition of the blocks later this year&#46; The remaining blocks at Red Road will be cleared by 2016&#46; The demolition of the Red Road flats is part of GHA&#39;s ongoing regeneration of the city&#46;]]></description>

<title>GHA helps tenants go green</title>
<description><![CDATA[GHA has installed solar panels to the first of 500 homes &#45; to help tenants save money on their fuel bills&#46;The solar panels generate free electricity during daylight hours for householders&#46;Tenants whose homes are fitted with solar panels can expect to save around &#163;100 every year on their fuel bills&#46;The solar panels also cut the carbon footprint of each home which helps the environment&#46;Glasgow City Council Leader Gordon Matheson joined GHA Chair Gordon Sloan at one of the first GHA homes fitted with solar panels&#46;Susan Lafferty&#44; 43&#44; from Baillieston has lived in her home for the past 11 years with husband Daniel&#44; 50&#44; and 17&#45;year&#45;old son Daryl&#46;She said: &amp;ldquo;I looked at all the benefits of the scheme and realised I had nothing to lose&#44; so I signed up&#46;&amp;ldquo;We spend nearly &#163;50 every two weeks on our key cards &#45; and the prices keep going up&#46; I was keen to try anything that would help us cut our fuel bills&#46;&amp;ldquo;It is also good that it helps the environment&#46; We already do our bit in the house by using all of the different coloured recycling bins&#46;&amp;ldquo;We were one of the first GHA houses to get the panels fitted&#44; but more and more are popping up on our street&#46;&quot;Each GHA house fitted with solar panels could cut 24 tonnes of CO2 emissions over a 25&#45;year period &#45; equivalent to filing five Olympic&#45;sized swimming pools&#46;Alex McGuire&#44; GHA&#39;s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;We&#39;re absolutely delighted with the response we had from tenants&#46; Fuel bills keep rising every year so we wanted to find another way to help people keep warm and also keep money in their pockets&#46;&amp;ldquo;Tenants will start to notice the difference to their fuel bills over the next few months&#46;&quot;The 500th home to be fitted with solar panels is expected to be completed by the end of next month&#46;The installation of the solar panels is one way GHA is contributing to Sustainable Glasgow &#45; a partnership which aims to make Glasgow one of the most sustainable cities in Europe and reduce the city&#39;s CO2 emissions by 30 per cent by 2020&#46;Councillor Matheson&#44; Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Sustainable Glasgow&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;This is a fantastic scheme to help Glasgow tenants cut their energy bills and make it easier to heat their homes&#46;&amp;ldquo;I was delighted to see for myself one of the first GHA homes fitted with solar panels and hear what a difference it would make for tenants&#46; Everyone has a right to live and bring up their families in a warm home which is affordable to heat&#46;&amp;ldquo;Through our Sustainable Glasgow network&#44; partners like GHA are working to bring real benefits to all Glaswegians through green projects and strong partnerships&#44; which are helping to a cleaner&#44; greener and healthier city&#46;&quot;Tenants who signed up for solar panels also received a visit from one of GHA&#39;s Fuel Advisors&#46; The Fuel Advisors showed tenants how to make the most of the free electricity generated during daylight hours&#46;The UK Government launched a renewable energy scheme in 2009 to increase the uptake of green technology&#46; As part of this&#44; feed&#45;in tariffs were introduced which reward customers for generating electricity&#46;Any surplus income generated by the feed&#45;in tariffs in the GHA properties will be reinvested in GHA homes&#46; A decision by the UK Government to cut feed&#45;in tariff rates is currently being challenged in the High Court&#46; The solar panels are fitted by building firm Apollo&#46; Regional Director for Apollo&#44; Eamonn McGarvey&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;We&#39;re delighted Apollo was asked to work with GHA on this important project&#44; installing solar panels on their properties on such a large scale&#46;&amp;ldquo;Our nationwide EcoFit service is dedicated to helping organisations like GHA find ways of helping residents reduce their fuel bills and improve their carbon footprint&#46; We&#39;re committed to ensuring that we deliver a quality project&#44; along with an excellent service&#44; to both GHA and its residents&#46;&quot;]]></description>

<title>Drumchapel kids design their own community calendar</title>
<description><![CDATA[YOUNGSTERS from three Drumchapel schools have had their artwork turned into a community calendar for 2012&#46;Staff at the GHA Drumchapel office invited pupils from local schools to submit drawings for a calendar competition&#46;And they were bowled over by the standard of entries from the kids aged 5 to 11&#46;After a tough job&#44; they finally chose the winning 12 from St Clare&#39;s&#44; Antonine and Camstradden primaries&#46; Their drawings now star in the calendar which has been distributed to local people through the schools and the housing office&#46;The artwork features a range of drawings from the seasons throughout the year&#46; All the winning youngsters&#44; their parents and teachers were invited into the housing office in Dalsetter Crescent for a presentation&#46; Each of the winners received a &#163;20 voucher and all three schools were given a &#163;50 donation to their Parent Teacher Association&#46;Housing Operations Manager Karen McLaughlin said: &amp;ldquo;We work closely with the Drumchapel community throughout the year but we really wanted to do something with youngsters from the area&#44; many of whom live in our homes&#46;&amp;ldquo;The calendar competition was very popular and we were amazed at the quality of the art&#46; We&#39;re delighted the children&#39;s great work will be on show in homes for the whole of 2012&#46;&quot;The winners were:St Clare&#39;s &#45; Kyle Riches&#44; Abbie Taylor&#44; Hannah Gangel&#44; Yascah AmerAntonine &#45; Faith Lewis&#44; Taylor Fletcher&#44; Kenzie MoirCamstradden &#45; Kaylah Mckee&#44; Caitlin Gamble&#44; Elle Frew&#44; Rebecca Riley&#44; Amylee Hutchinson&#46;]]></description>

<title>GHA bursaries helps tenants go to university</title>
<description><![CDATA[People from GHA communities are being given a helping hand to go to university&#46;Scotland&#39;s biggest social landlord is providing bursaries of up to &#163;1&#44;500 to help tenants and their children with travel expenses&#44; textbooks&#44; childcare or other costs necessary for their studies&#46;The first students have just received the bursaries &#45; and met Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP at the GHA Academy to chat about their studies&#46;GHA&#39;s Better Futures Fund bursaries are open to anyone over 17 who lives in a GHA home and will be studying at a university in Glasgow&#46;The bursary scheme currently supports new students at Glasgow University&#44; but will be extended to those wanting to study at any of Glasgow&#39;s universities next year&#46;Craig Martin&#44; 18&#44; from Milton&#44; is studying for an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow University&#46;He said: &amp;ldquo;I get a student loan&#44; which I have to pay back&#44; so the grant from GHA is very important &#45; it would be hard for me to continue my studies without it&#46;&amp;ldquo;I&#39;m funding myself&#44; so any money coming in is a big help&#46; I need the extra money for travel expenses&#44; a laptop and text books &#45; some books cost as much as &#163;70&#46;&amp;ldquo;The grant will help a great deal towards my future learning&#46;&quot;GHA Chair Gordon Sloan added: &amp;ldquo;We always want to extend opportunities to people from our communities and our Better Futures Fund helps us reach those who might not otherwise be able to benefit from higher education&#46;&amp;ldquo;It is another way for us to help break down barriers to people achieving their full potential&#46;&amp;ldquo;It was great to meet the students who are receiving our bursaries &#45; and I wish them the best of luck with their studies&#46;&quot;GHA&#39;s Better Futures Fund is a partnership between GHA&#44; Glasgow City Council&#39;s Education Department and universities in Glasgow&#46;Professor Graham Caie&#44; Vice Principal of Glasgow University&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;We are delighted to be a partner in this initiative&#46;&quot;For more information&#44; or to apply for a bursary&#44; contact Hannah Stevenson on 274 6629&#46;]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Christmas came early for a group of Primary 1 pupils from the Gorbals when they were invited into the GHA Customer Service Centre to meet Santa Claus&#46;Workers at the 24&#45;hour contact centre came up with the idea after having created Santa&#39;s grotto as part of their own Christmas celebrations&#46;Due to the non&#45;stop nature of the centre&#44; the staff are unable to go out for a Christmas lunch or get together as a full team&#46; Instead&#44; the managers and staff bring Christmas into the office by cooking up a festive lunch and inviting workers to pay Santa Claus a visit&#46;And this year the grotto they created in the Gorbals centre was so impressive they decided to share it with local children&#46;The lucky pupils from St Francis and Blackfriars primary schools were taken in to meet Santa one by one while GHA staff&#44; dressed as Santa&#39;s helpers&#44; kept the others occupied with storytelling&#44; carol singing and Christmas crafts&#46;Every youngster was given a present and drinks and snacks to make it a magical day&#46;Customer Service Team Leader Lillian Baikie said:  &amp;ldquo;It&#39;s been a lot of work but when you see how excited the kids are to meet Santa it&#39;s just fantastic &#45; it really melted our hearts&#46;&quot;GHA Customer Experience Manager Karen Durnian said: &amp;ldquo;We&#39;ve been here in the Gorbals for three years now and feel like we&#39;re absolutely part of the community&#44; but we thought this would be a great way to introduce ourselves to the local children&#46;&amp;ldquo;Our staff have worked flat out in their own time to make this an extra special event&#46;&quot;Mrs Nicola McHutchison&#44; P1 teacher at Blackfriars Primary School&#44; said: &amp;ldquo;We kept this as a surprise for the children&#44; so when we were on our way here they were all trying to guess where they were going&#46;&amp;ldquo;But when we arrived and they were greeted by Santa&#39;s little helpers they were just giddy with excitement&#46;&amp;ldquo;Santa&#39;s grotto looks fantastic and the staff have organised so many activities for the kids&#46;&quot;GHA&#39;s Customer Service Centre is staffed 24&#47;7 by a team of around 100 dedicated customer advisors&#46; They provide a one&#45;stop service for all inquiries from GHA tenants and factored homeowners including repairs and bill payments&#46;]]></description>
