We want you to be secure and safe in your home. The emergency services have helped us come up with the top tips below – please take note!

Fire Safety

The most common causes of house fires are chip pans / deep fat fryers, or smokers' materials setting fire to upholstery such as chairs and sofas.

Even if you don't smoke or use a chip pan you could still be at risk from fire in the home, so the following advice might be of assistance:

  • Install a working smoke alarm. Test your smoke alarm weekly and change its battery annually. Never remove the batteries for other uses.
  • Keep your house keys nearby - you might need to get out quickly in the event of fire.
  • Think of a safe exit plan for your household in the event of a fire.

Crime prevention

Please secure your house by using the following crime prevention advice - it will make your home a safer place to live in:

  • Flat or house doors: it is essential to use mortice locks, spy-holes and door chains where fitted.
  • Never leave spare keys in hiding places - they will be found.
  • Always close and (where locks are fitted) lock windows before you go out.
  • When you are out, consider using timer switches to activate lights or radios.
  • Never keep large sums of money at home.
  • If you have jewellery or other irreplaceable valuables or documents, think about installing a small safe or security box which is firmly secured. If existing locks need to be repaired please request that this is done.
