Feeling the chill?
Keep cosy in your home
Set your heating to 21°C (70°F) during the day and 18°C (64°F) at night. If it’s really cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning up the thermostat. Remember to get your heating checked regularly, and always keep your home well ventilated.
Bad weather conditions can affect the safety of your home and its contents. Here's some easy tips to keep things running smoothly:
- Lofts can be kept warm by leaving the access door open a little
- Check dripping taps and overflows
- Report repairs when needed.
These actions help to prevent freezing of waste pipes and flooding. You should have contents insurance to protect your belongings just in case.

If you have frozen or burst pipes
Find out the location of your mains supply and stopcock. Turn off your close or house mains water supply with a water key or turn off the stopcock inside the house.
Switch off your boiler (gas or solid fuel) or electric immersion heater. If your pipes burst switch off the electricity at the mains. If you are in a house with burst pipes turn on all the taps and leave them on to drain the tank.
WARNING do not attempt to drain the central heating system.
Advise your neighbours that the water has been turned off. If you need to report a repair please call us on 0800 479 7979.
